Calla Lily Valley: More Beauty at Garrapata State Park
I will be the first to admit that I couldn’t do this place justice. I had the wrong lenses, the wrong light, the wrong time of day, and was so overwhelmed with the surreal beauty of wild calla lilies that I couldn’t even concentrate on creating the right composition. Regardless, it was absolutely incredible and a spot like this is worth sharing, especially for all my east coast friends who will find this as unimaginable as I did.
I’ve dug as far as my patience would allow into Goggle and was unable to come up with a solid answer about the origins of this incredible sight. The best idea that I read indicated that the calla lilies are an invasive blub (which I know to be true, if you can grow them successfully) which were introduced to the valley to prevent erosion. I highly doubt that based on their location, but it’s the best that I’ve got. Regardless… this spot is an incredible canyon full of breathtakingly beautiful and prized flowers that appear each spring. We arrived a tad late and many of the blooms were withered and brown, so I’ve marked my calendar to visit earlier next year.
Calla Lily Valley is a sight to behold and something I hope to revisit many times.
