Last month we made a weekend trip to Tahoe to check out the record snowfall that California has seen this winter. It was unlike anything we could imagine. Snow was piled so high that it completely covered buildings, crushed cars, and overhung the roads like cliff walls. And it was absolutely breathtaking. While there, 8 or so additional inches fell and left the trails covered with fresh powder for us to cross country ski and snowshoe. We hunkered down out of the cold at the Claire Tappan Lodge, which might be the closest thing the US has to the Refugios of Italy.
