Soft and Golden- A Photo Walk in Avon, NC

Armed with my Sony a6700 camera + a few lenses, each morning this spring, I woke with the dawn, poured coffee into my thermos and set off for a walk down the beach. It’s one mile from my house to the Avon Fishing Pier, the perfect distance to get the body moving as the day begins.

First light over the sand dunes

Despite following the exact same route each day, no two mornings are the same. On this particular morning, I photographed the sun rays peeking over the dunes and didn’t take another photo until I was at the pier. Instead of photography, I enjoyed the quiet calm that comes with a sun rising over the ocean. Witnessing these moments is a type of meditation for me.

Once I arrived at the pier, I alternated between lenses to capture the pier house bathed in beautiful light as well as the activity going happening on and around the pier. A group of surfers were riding the waves, soft and delicate currents that shot them towards the shore.

The light was simply beautiful, golden and glowy cutting through the mist that hung over the ocean surface.

Groups of fisherman gathered to gab, perhaps discussing what they hoped to catch that day or maybe what had been caught yesterday.

Inspired to grab either a fishing pole or a surfboard, I tucked my camera away and set off for the walk back to my house.
